Jeremy Frey (Passamaquoddy) is one of the most respected Indigenous basket makers working today. Descended from a long line of basket makers, his work is known for its intricate design and exquisite artistry, which reflect both traditional techniques and his own creative vision.

The stark white cover and geometric type forms lean into this double existence—simultaneously presenting a stage for the incredible palette and form of Frey’s baskets to shine, with little to no distraction from the undeniable genius structures of the basket itself. Furthermore, the plates form a dizzying labyrinth of Frey’s oeuvre, highlighting multiple perspectives of each basket—from top to bottom, to inside and out (there are several “double baskets” in which the basket inside is an entirely different rubric than the one on the outside). The grid of essays echo this by enacting a visual warp and weft of columns and rows—interweaving archival documentation, process, and material. At face value, this book is a quintessential monograph, but within the pages, the canon of Art History as we know it is taking a new direction.
