Described by Artbook as “a visually immersive exploration of the provocative and humanistic themes at the heart of Almodóvar’s cinema,” this 300+ page bilingual book is laid out with side-by-side Spanish-English texts, typeset in distinct but complimentary styles and features lush photographic reproductions, installation shots, and montage sections that reproduce the inter-film dialectics. This edition also includes a tip-in section of film stills from a specific montage in the show, generating a mini-film within the book. The interior follows the exhibition’s span from 1984’s What Have I Done to Deserve This? to 2019’s Pain and Glory, and surveys Almodóvar’s filmography organized around the exhibition’s key scenes and themes. The book weaves between interviews, essays, montage, and includes an illustrated filmography. Maximizing the effect of montage, film stills, and the powerful presence of Catholicism, camp, punk, noir, queerness, and other key influences, the book enshrines the subversion, incisive empathy, humor, and vivid vision of Almodóvar’s cinematic works.
