Curated by Deaf West Theatre in collaboration with the LA Phil’s Insight program, the symposium See / Feel / Hear Music invites audiences to engage with Deaf artists whose work explores the creation and reception of music, the innate music of sign language, and the politics of sound.

The chapbook documents some of the ways in which Deaf and hard of hearing artists encounter, create, think about, and experience all types of music. The texture on the flaps and inside cover is an image of a sound wave from Winston Kock’s experiment in 1965 where he created the first scanning technique to display sound. The back cover is from Ernst Chladni’s experiment in 1787 where he ran a violin bow down the side of a metal plate with sand on top—one of the earliest visualizations of sound. The color palette oscillates between high and low contrast activating the eyes and the unfinished threads invite material play.
