Phillip K. Smith III: 10 Columns
AIGA: 50 Books | 50 Covers Winner, 2019

Bridge Projects is a Los Angeles–based gallery with programming that aims to foster open and interdisciplinary explorations of the relationship between contemporary art and spiritual and religious traditions. With each successive exhibition since their 2019 opening, Content Object designed a publication as part of a cohesive series that borrows from the form of a pocket-sized prayer book. The format allows the cost of the books to remain low and production to be streamlined, since the main content of the books—two to three essays accompanied by artist’s plates—is fitted into an adaptable template. Each series  of three books unites a year’s worth of exhibitions—a union visualized by the completed logo on the spine.

Each individual volume begins and ends with a signature of extended endpapers: Volume 1 (a monograph for artist Phillip K. Smith III) includes the curator’s research into color, printed in 4-color fluorescents; Volume 2 (a group exhibition entitled, “To Bough and To Bend”) is an artist’s response to, “If you were a tree, what tree would you be,” with answers illustrated by a collection of botanical specimens, printed on Eames Architectural Diffused leaf-like paper with a soft bronze ink; and Volume 3 (a group exhibition entitled “A Composite Leviathan) is a Q&A between Chinese-born artists and the curators, printed in silver ink on black paper.

This unique treatment of the prologue and epilogue reflect the individual thematics of each show and the distinctive curatorial vision of the gallery.
